Most people dont realize the art and finesse that goes into newborn sessions, which is why I have decided to share with you everything I wish I knew BEFORE starting newborn photography. When I first started this journey in 2018 I didnt know half of the tips that I do now. I was leaving my newborn sessions feeling defeated and discouraged. I searched high and low for all of the best tips and as soon as I started implenting them, my sessions finally started running smoothly and beautiful art followed. Here are the tips that changed my sessions for the best!

1. Education is the Most Important Investment
Newborns are so delicate and tiny, and every one of them is different. A baby’s safety should always be the number one priority. Workshops, online courses, and mentorship programs can teach you how to do each pose safely and greatly enhance your expertise and artistic vision. Investing in education helps you stay up-to-date with the latest techniques and ensures you provide the best service to your clients.
2. You Don’t Need All the Props
Focusing on quality over quantity helps create a clean and timeless aesthetic. A few well-chosen props can highlight the baby without overwhelming the image. Simplicity often leads to more powerful and emotionally resonant photographs. By selecting props carefully, you ensure that the baby remains the focal point of each image.

3. Studio Temperature Matters
Newborns are highly sensitive to temperature. Keeping the studio warm, around 80°F, ensures the baby stays comfortable and relaxed, which is crucial for achieving those serene and peaceful shots. A comfortable baby is less likely to be fussy and more likely to sleep soundly during the session. Proper studio temperature creates an ideal environment for capturing those precious moments.
4. Confidence is a Learned Skill
Confidence in your abilities and interactions with clients grows through experience and practice. It impacts how you conduct sessions, direct clients, and make creative decisions. Building confidence leads to more efficient sessions and better client relationships. With time and practice, you’ll find yourself more at ease, allowing your artistic abilities to shine.

5. Charge Your Worth
Valuing your work appropriately ensures sustainability for your business. It reflects the quality, skill, and effort you put into each session. Charging your worth also attracts clients who respect and appreciate your expertise, leading to better overall experiences. Proper pricing communicates professionalism and helps you maintain a thriving business.
6. Everyone is Not Your Ideal Client
Trying to please everyone can dilute your brand and artistic vision. Identifying and targeting your ideal client allows you to tailor your services and marketing efforts more effectively, leading to greater satisfaction for both you and your clients. By focusing on your niche, you attract clients who truly value your unique style and approach.

7. Take the Safe Shot
Safety shots provide a solid foundation and ensure that you have beautiful, usable images, even if more creative poses don’t work out as planned. Once you’ve gotten the safety shot, then you can take the time to perfect and fix things. Prioritizing safety ensures that the baby’s well-being is never compromised while allowing you the freedom to explore creative ideas.
By keeping these key points in mind, you can enhance your skills and build a successful newborn photography business. Newborn photography takes practice, and most importantly, patience. You can follow along on my Instagram and Youtube!
